Best of the Broke: June
June hasn’t seen but a day or so of gloom this year, and we’re a little sad to see such a perfect month come to an end. However, it looks as though we’re facing nothing but clear skies and warm temperatures for at least the next 60-90 days, so we can’t grieve all that deeply. Since it’s a beautiful summer Friday, we’ve decided to give your brain an even bigger break than usual (obviously we know we’re not The New Yorker) by simply recapping the BGG content you may have missed throughout this gloriously gorgeous month.
To start, we’d like to announce that the Skinny Tees and Beach Bag giveaways will be officially ending Sunday night at midnight. If you haven’t already entered -- do so now! We will announce the winners on Monday.
While scoring a prize can make you feel flush, getting hired to hangout with a millionaire can make you feel like the luckiest girl alive (also, a prostitute). Since we don’t condone selling yourself, nor do we think you need a man to live out your fiscal fantasies, this month we concocted a Pretty Woman Day Out that allows you to indulge like Vivian without requiring a Richard.
Since the real hero in every girl’s life is her dad, we also gave you detailed directions this month for showing him a good time out and about in LA for Father’s Day. Since life is short and daddies can’t be around forever, we suggest you not limit these itineraries to one day in June but rather take pops out whenever possible.
Speaking of being out, we know you like to break free of your paycheck-providing-prison as early as possible most days, which is why we put together BGG Happy Hour Hops for West 3rd Street and Los Feliz this month. We also gave you the insider scoop on newbie Venice bar Dry Tour and invited you to your own private BGG happy hour. While you’re out exploring our June suggestions in July, you may also want to reference our list of the 7 food trucks we’re currently craving.
As broke girls like to drink at home as well (don’t be ashamed, it’s cheaper) we asked Robyn and Jarrid of The Poor Porker to give us some DIY not-so-simple syrup recipes along with directions on how to whip them into decadent yet affordable cocktails. You could serve said cocktails at the high-school-themed-shindig we provided you with directions on throwing this month, but Everclear and Kool-Aid would probably be more appropriate.
While we do not consider ourselves to be vapid LA girls per se (hey, one of us went to Stanford!), we do think it’s important that a broke girl look her best at all times. So this month, we enlisted cutie Mr. Kate’s advice on DIY’ing gel manicures. We also took down notes from the very impressive founder of Bellacures on everything from the summer’s hottest nail trends to business ownership’s biggest challenges. We definitely have girl crushes on both of those women, but none so big as the one we have on Single Ladies star Denise Vasi, who dished out her budget beauty (and life!) secrets this month as well.
The aesthetic of your home may not be as important as that of your nails (arguably), but we still gave it some attention by providing you with a few picks from the ladies over at Avenue Interior Design for adding a pop of neon to your walls.
While we know BGG isn’t going to necessarily improve your IQ, we don’t want to join your employer in causing your brain to atrophy, either. So, this month we schooled you on Law & Order (you never know when these crime-fighting skills might come in handy) and sent you to summer classes via Skilloop.
And since it’s always better to live in the present than the past, we would like to leave you with the 10 things we’re coveting for the 4th of July. Nothing says “Independence Day” quite like an outfit so skimpy it would get you sent to jail in most countries, no?
In this day and age, the art of social media is important to master for any job, and we think you can make that argument to your boss should s/he catch you playing with us on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Polyvore, or Tumblr.
See you in July!
xo,
Erin & Michelle
