You have a bag of clothes, a spare game controller, and a shelf you want back. Do you need two selling apps, or can one do the job?
The Mercari vs Poshmark choice starts with your pile. Poshmark is my pick for clothes that go well together. Mercari suits sellers with more than clothes to clear.
The fee gap is real. So is the cost of time spent on an item that never sells. This guide uses US fees and explains the sums before you spend a weekend making listings.
Mercari vs Poshmark at a glance
| Mercari | Poshmark |
|---|---|
| My pick for diverse inventory: clothes plus household goods | My pick for a closet focused on clothes, shoes, and bags |
| 10% selling fee on the item and buyer-paid shipping | $2.95 below $15; 20% at $15 or more |
| Buyer Protection fee adds 3.6% at checkout | No separate buyer fee in the current standard fee structure |
| Shipping quote depends on the parcel and service | $6.49 flat shipping fee up to 5 lb |
| Useful if you want to sell more than fashion | Useful if one buyer may want several closet pieces |
Seller fees: compare what you keep
Do not use old advice that says Mercari has no seller fees. Its fee structures have changed. Mercari now takes a cut when an item sells, and the buyer also pays a fee.
Mercari's current fee page sets the selling fee at 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping. There is no separate processing fee on top of that standard charge. The buyer's 3.6% fee uses the same base.
Poshmark charges a flat fee of $2.95 below $15, then 20% at $15 and above. Texas sellers also pay a seller fee tax. Offers that include a shipping discount lower your take-home amount further.
A $30 sale, with the same shipping cost
Suppose you sell a jacket for $30. To compare the fees, use $6.49 buyer-paid shipping on each app. That is Poshmark's standard rate. On Mercari it is an example amount, not a promised label quote. This sum leaves out sales tax and the Texas fee tax.
| Step | Mercari / Poshmark |
|---|---|
| Sale price | $30 / $30 |
| Seller fee | $3.65 / $6.00 |
| Seller keeps after fee | $26.35 / $24.00 |
| Buyer total before tax | $37.80 / $36.49 |
Mercari leaves the seller $2.35 more here. But the buyer pays $1.31 more. A lower seller fee does not mean a lower checkout total for everyone.
That is why I would look at both sides before pricing. If your Mercari buyer needs a price cut to cover the extra charge, some of your fee saving disappears. If a Poshmark buyer pays more for the same jacket, the final sale price may outweigh the fee gap.
Cheap items need a different plan
On a $10 sale, Poshmark's $2.95 cut leaves $7.05 before your own costs. On Mercari, the label amount still affects the fee when the buyer pays for shipping. Check the full sum before assuming a tiny sale is worth packing.
For either app, group low-value items that one person might want. A set of similar-size clothes has a clearer buyer than a random bundle of things from every room.
These figures are proceeds, not profit. Take off the cost of the item, boxes, tape, and any postage you cover. Cash from your own old clothes is a useful start. It does not prove that buying stock to resell will pay.
Shipping: flat rate or parcel by parcel?
Shipping is where Mercari vs Poshmark can flip. A thin shirt, a pair of boots, and a fragile bowl need different packing. Do not choose a shipping label from the item's bare weight alone.
Poshmark keeps the standard label simple
A standard Poshmark parcel costs the buyer $6.49 for up to 5 lb. It uses USPS Ground Advantage. A bundle from the same closet can use one label within that limit. Sellers cover overweight charges.
The flat rate is easy for casual sellers to plan around. It may also help a buyer who wants two or three fashion items. For one cheap, light item, the shipping cost can feel large next to the price.
Pack first, then check the weight. A box and padding count too. The current service is not USPS Priority Mail, so do not use Priority Mail packaging for a Ground Advantage order.
Mercari gives you more parcel choices
Mercari offers prepaid labels. You can also ship on your own. With prepaid shipping, you can choose whether you or the buyer pays. If you cover it, the label cost comes out of your proceeds.
Enter the full weight and size to compare shipping methods. Lightweight items may fit a lower rate than a bulky parcel. A light but large box can still cost more because carriers may price by size as well as weight.
Drop the parcel at the right carrier. Do not hand a carrier's economy parcel to the post office just because the post office might make the last part of the delivery. Follow the label's instructions.
Seller protection has conditions
Mercari's Shipping Protection rules can cover a lost or damaged parcel up to $200. That cap applies to standard, economy, and Media Mail. First-Class Envelopes have a $20 cap. You must meet the rules for labels, packing, tracking, and timing. Other terms apply too.
Do not read “up to” as a promise that every claim will be paid. A prepaid shipping label is only one part of the claim. Keep photos and the carrier receipt.
Have a higher-value item? Check the cap first. If you ship on your own, you lose this Mercari cover. You may need to buy cover from the carrier instead. Price that before you list.
What are you actually trying to sell?
Start with what buyers search for. If you have a named style in a clear size, make that easy to find. If you have a used device, show its model and condition. A broad marketplace cannot fix missing details.
A closet full of clothes: start with Poshmark
Is your stock mostly clothes? Poshmark makes sense if a buyer might build a bundle. Put measurements in the listing so fashion buyers can judge fit. Show wear at cuffs, soles, straps, and seams.
Poshmark buyers do not all want the same brands or price range. Check similar sold pieces before you set a fixed price. An active listing with a hopeful price is not evidence of what someone paid.

A mixed clear-out: give Mercari a look
Mercari is a good place to start with a mixed pile. Think home goods, toys, and small tech as well as clothes. Check what the app allows before you list.
For gaming consoles and other used tech, show the item itself. Lay out what comes with it. List missing cords, damage, and any function you have not checked. Remove your personal data before it leaves your hands.
Do not buy diverse inventory just to fill a shop. Start with things you already own. A new category can bring more packing work, more questions, and a learning curve you did not price in.
Will Mercari bring faster sales?
Neither app can promise quick sales. In a discussion among Poshmark sellers, some people said sales were slow. One still used Mercari for the odd sale that other apps had not brought in.
Those people chose to join the thread. They do not speak for all sellers. Take it as a reason to test your own stock. Do not assume a new app will fix a slow closet.
Price, condition, demand, and timing all matter. If buyers shop for your item at $15, moving a $35 listing to another app may not solve the problem.
Listing work, offers, and time spent
Both apps let you set an asking price. Buyers can make offers, so decide your floor before they arrive. A fixed price is the start of the conversation, not always the final price.
Poshmark has a social selling style, with sharing, Posh Parties, and bundles. Those features can suit someone who enjoys tending a closet. They can also take time away from photos and packing. Do not assume active sharing or joining Posh Parties is a guaranteed route to more buyers.
Mercari's listing process can suit sellers who prefer to describe each item and manage offers as they come in. Take care with its sales tools. A price drop costs you money whether it takes one tap or ten.
Get the basics right on both apps. Use a clear first photo and a plain title. Show flaws and give useful facts. Choose the right label. A title stuffed with random words does not help a buyer choose.
Set a short daily window for messages and offers. Track time spent managing listings as well as cash received. A $5 gain is less appealing if it takes an extra hour to earn.
When does the money reach you?
On Mercari, buyers get three days to rate an order once it shows as delivered. When both sides rate, the sale is done. If the buyer does not rate in time, the app can close it. A claim can hold that up.
An app balance is not cash in your bank yet. Mercari offers successful ACH withdrawals without a fee, limited to one per day. Faster payout routes can cost extra. Check the terms before you pay for speed.
On Poshmark too, check which funds you can take out. Do not count a pending sale as cash. Have a bill due tomorrow? A new listing or a parcel still in the mail is not a safe plan to pay it.
Keep payments and claims within the app. Seller protection is not a reason to skip records. Save the photos, receipt, and tracking until the sale is settled.
A small test beats a full shop move
Try five items that suit the app. Use good photos and fair prices. Set a review date so you do not judge the result after a single quiet afternoon.
- Record each item's asking price and packed weight.
- Note the buyer's checkout cost where available.
- Track offers, sales, fees, and time spent.
- Compare net cash, not likes or views.
- Change one thing at a time when a listing stalls.
Do you use multiple platforms? Remove the other listing as soon as an item sells. Selling the same item twice can cause more trouble than the extra reach was worth.
Track your sell-through rate too. Divide items sold by items listed over the same time span. For a tiny closet, one sale can swing that rate. Use it as a clue, not a promise.
Mercari vs Poshmark: common questions
Is Mercari cheaper for sellers?
Often, yes, under the current base fees. But Mercari charges on buyer-paid shipping too. Your final price, label, discounts, and item cost decide what you keep. Compare the whole order.
Which app is easier for a first sale?
For a bag of clothes, I would start with Poshmark and learn its label and bundle rules. For mixed household stock, I would try Mercari. Neither has a guaranteed first-sale timeline.
Can I offer free shipping?
You may be able to cover or discount shipping through the app's settings, but the carrier still gets paid. Treat that cost as part of your price. Free shipping to the buyer is not free to the seller.
The verdict: match the app to the pile
Poshmark is my pick for a closet clear-out where buyers could bundle pieces. Try Mercari when you have more than clothes. Check that its fee math works for your parcels.
Start small. Keep only the listings and habits that earn enough to justify your time. You are trying to clear space and keep cash, not create a second unpaid job.
