DIY Kentucky Derby
Our daddies never bought us ponies, and we still feel cheated because of it. We're also not quite part of the crowd that gallivants about the country (and globe) to major events like the Kentucky Derby. But since we’re all about hacking into the lives of those more privileged than us, today we’ve put together some ideas for a soiree that’ll make you feel as though you’re betting on your favorite horse at Churchill Downs rather than sitting at home in your My Little Pony pajamas (um, not saying that we still have those, cough cough). And, we’re off...!
Attire
Grab a big goofy hat (we like this one for something a little less ridic), a sweet dress (this floral version is also perfect), and some gloves (optional). See the Kardashians for inspiration on how to look appropriately stupid. Incentivize your guests to dress up by including a “Best Hat” award of some sort (we suggest this as the prize).
Games
Speaking of games, we also recommend that you have each guest pick a horse’s name out of a hat as they arrive. This way, everyone will feel more invested in the event (which, let's be honest, only lasts about 2 minutes). The person matched up with the winning horse should get a prize. We recommend this.
Decor
Keep your decor simple, since you’re going for a nice country feel (and since the hats should really be the main attraction here). Mason jars are perfect for holding candles, flowers, drinks, or candy, and cheap red-and-white checked tablecloths complement the look.
You probably want red roses since they’re everywhere at the Derby, but you can also get by with less expensive Southern blooms such as daisies or peonies.
Drinks
It would not be a Kentucky Derby party without two classic Southern beverages -- sweet tea and mint juleps -- both of which are pretty simple to prepare. If you want to go the extra mile, get creative by serving these delicious-sounding cherry mint julep slushies or these Kentucky mimosas. Cool, refreshing strawberry iced tea is another option.
Food
Relish in the fact that on Derby day, you have a valid excuse to gorge on fattening food! God bless the South. Some of our favorites include fried green tomatoes, zucchini-flecked cornbread (a nice twist on a classic), chicken biscuits, hushpuppies with jalapeno goat cheese, and garlic-and-cheese grits. If you’re looking for healthy snacks that won’t take any time to prep, you can always serve watermelon, peaches, or apples.
But if you’re like us, and what you’re really looking for is dessert, we suggest the following Kentucky classics: moon pies, bourbon balls, and praline pecans (a great option if you’re short on time and/or culinary skills). For a Southern dessert with a modern twist, try red velvet cheesecake pops or mint julep cupcakes.
If the Derby isn't your thing, try our Cinco de Mayo suggestions instead.
