Friday Night In: Dine Like The Dame
We're still not over Elizabeth Taylor's passing, and some nights we like to make like Charlotte York Goldenblatt and sit at home fantasizing that our lives are even half as interesting as the Dame's. Since the highlight of our jewelry collection tends to be Silly Bandz, though, we often need a little extra help getting inspired.
Though Chasen's no longer exists, you can make Taylor's favorite chili yourself with this recipe. She allegedly loved it so much she had it flown in buckets to Rome. We can't imagine loving anything enough to replace authentic Italian cuisine with it, but hey, at least it's not as bad as flying in The Coffee Bean (ahem, Britney). If chili doesn't suit you, order some grub to-go from Canter's, one of Elizabeth's favorite spots in L.A.
You can also mix up one (or a few) of her favorite cocktails, which we've listed here. Miz Taylor often said that 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf' was the favorite of her many starring roles.
Rent it, or stream 'Cleopatra' on Netflix to get front row seats to one of the most notorious love affairs of all time.
You could also go for a 'Law & Order' marathon, given she was
obsessed with the show. Episodes can also be streamed on Netflix.
If you do get the urge to go out, stop by El Cholo
for dinner and then head to The Abbey for some dancing - both are
reported to have been favorites of the Dame. El Cholo...who knew! The
original is the one on Pico, which we used to frequent in college.
Either way, don't let the night end without making a donation to amfAR, the AIDS research foundation Elizabeth founded after her friend Rock Hudson famously battled the disease.
In the morning, try some blood red orange juice. Her favorite. Here's some help on finding the fruit around town.
